Recent SINCE winning the 2006 Heineken Green Synergy DJ competition, Nicholas 'DJ Nicco' Green has become a stable on the Jamaican airwaves.
Dubbed the Mad Professor, DJ Nicco has stamped his own brand of mixing on the morning show Rise and Blaze for FAME 95 FM for almost a year now.
His straightforward, charismatic personality is the perfect counterbalance to co-host 'Lady Rennae' Garel's bubbly talk during the morning drive.
Now known for setting trends where hit songs are concerned, Nicholas was dubbed DJ Nicco by his older cousins when he started mixing on his grandmother's old turntables; he was only nine years old.
But Nicco, who attended the Hopefield Preparatory School in Kingston and later Campion College only took being a DJ seriously when he had finished pursuing his education.
He had not put down DJing entirely though, as over the years he had found time to link with sound systems such as Revolution, Travellers Syndicate and a couple of others who would allow him to watch and learn, picking up most of the techniques he is so popularly know for today.
It would be these techniques, his on-mike antics, his scratch ability and knowing how to read the crowd and select the right songs, along with his charismatic personality that later would later win him the 2006 Heineken Green Synergy DJ Finals.
Following his Green Synergy win in 2006, Nicco who was a resident DJ at Margaritaville Montego Bay, interned at Fame FM. But he did not officially join the Fame FM family, who he lovingly calls his extended family until 2009.
Now that he is a seasoned DJ, what does DJ Nicco see for the future of Jamaican DJing?
"I believe the future will find Jamaican audiences more welcoming to female disc jocks. Naz is an excellent DJ, I love her to death; so are Elektra and Sparks and Sunshine."
When asked for his advice for TEENs, who also want to pursue a career in DJing, he emphasised that all students no matter what their future career choices, need to have an excellent and diverse educational base.
"If you don't have any sense you will be tricked by everyone in the music industry, you need something to fall back on," he said.
